OUR LAST WEEK FOR BOXES!

Thank you to all the parents who dropped off some nice big boxes for our little "travellers"!

I did tweet a photo of ONE of the many vehicles they made in their imaginations this week. Here is our train!
                          chrisblahout@twitter.com

We will be wrapping up our "TRANSPORTATION" focus this week and getting ready for the much anticipated April focus on "SPRING"! (If it ever arrives?)

So, if you have a box to donate, please bring it as soon as possible so we can continue to enjoy inventing different vehicles over this last week. {The boxes get beat up with all 4 classes (85 students) playing with them.}
*As of March 31st we will not need any more boxes, thank you.

Mme. Blahout kindly requests large cardboard BOXES for these activities.

Children are not permitted to take them on the bus, so please drop the boxes off at school following March Break.

MORE ABOUT POPCORN WORDS

The previous posting was targeted for
Senior Kindergarten students who should be developmentally ready to focus on learning "words".

However, if you believe your JK child is ready to
move onto learning words then great!  Keep in mind that the 'cart' can't go before the 'horse'; so letter knowledge must come before words.

Remember, the tips that are presented on this blog are for informational purposes.  We want parents to be included in the learning process because a parent is the most influential member of the education team!

POPCORN WORDS "POP"!

ACADEMICALLY SPEAKING . . .

- Junior Kindergarten focuses on letter recognition and then connecting letter sounds to letter names.

- Senior Kindergarten then moves from solidifying letter knowledge to learning high frequency words, otherwise known as "Popcorn Words".  Finally they move to emergent reading skills, sounding out unfamiliar words mixed with these high frequency words. Every step along the journey is important!

This week we will be sending home a booklet of high frequency words printed on a popcorn design.   We encourage families to use the 'props' to help their emergent readers practice these words.  Post the props around the house and point them out whenever they "pop" up in texts.

Please encourage your child to recognize or read several of these words every day!  Knowing these words by sight will help your child be prepared for Grade One!

Thank you for your assistance in this regard.
