UPCOMING REPORT CARDS and INTERVIEW REQUESTS

Term 1 report cards go home on February 18 and will be followed by interviews on Wednesday, February 24 between 3:15 to 5:30 pm.

Interviews are on a "by request" basis. If the teacher would like to meet with you then you will receive a written request.

Interview times will be organized manually using old-fashioned paper, which means choosing your own time slot will not be available on-line.

If you would like to request an interview with the teacher then simply check the appropriate box on the last page of the report card. Also please add some choices for your "preferred" time slots and we will do our best to accommodate you.

FEBRUARY NEWS

February / Février is the month that we celebrate friendship / l’amitié, caring and
love/l’amour.  In addition to the traditional activities that surround the ways we share our love and our feelings with our families and friends (e.g. valentines), children will be learning that their friendships are based not only on similarities, but on differences as well.  These differences are celebrated as gifts from God, and all traits are an important part of an interrelated community of friends.  We will emphasize the value of each human being, and the idea that friendship requires tolerance, patience and the acceptance of each other’s varied strengths and weaknesses.  Your children will discover that not everyone holds the same abilities but that all are valued members of our group.

Language activities will continue to include a focus on letter recognition and the sounds that letters make (sound/symbol association).  They will also be encouraged to relate to stories by linking their experiences to those of storybook characters.  Math activities will include various areas of measurement, such as using a scale to compare the weight of a variety of objects, as well as measuring the height of items with our hands or miscellaneous objects (non-standard measurement).

    French theme-related vocabulary includes:

   February/ février                 love/ amour            share/ partager            friendship/ amitié

friend/ ami(e)                  heart/ coeur             St. Valentine’s Day/ le jour de la St. Valentin

to like (love) / aimer         to play / jouer           to smile / sourire           to help / aider

On Friday, February 12th we ask that your child wear red, white, or pink clothing to celebrate upcoming Valentine's Day on the Sunday in order to exchange valentine cards. Students are invited to bring in their valentines next week, so that we can distribute them ahead of time into decorated bags, which will be opened on the Friday, the 12th.

*** Please include only the sender’s name  (i.e. your child’s) on the valentine card. ***  Do not address them to individual students.  This allows for simple distribution and ensures that no one is forgotten.
The class numbers are
RED GROUP - 15, BLUE GROUP - 27, GREEN GROUP - 26, PURPLE GROUP - 29
[Also, please send the cards in a bag labeled with your child’s name.]

Report cards will be sent home on February 18th.  Just a reminder that, as per Board
policy, Junior Kindergarten students' reports will be comprised of anecdotal* comments.  (*Grades will not be assigned for this term but will be in June.)  Senior Kindergarten will have both marks and comments. Interviews will be by REQUEST ONLY.

** Please RETURN the report card envelope, as we will recycle it for the June reports.

JANUARY NEWS

As the school year progresses, there will be growing expectations of students to demonstrate their knowledge of letter sounds, and increasingly basic sight words and short phrases. Students are required to produce more written work, including the use of appropriately “sized” letters (lower case versus upper case).  Please reinforce an awareness of this in the world outside school as much as you can, such as on street signs, games, websites, recipes, etc.

      * Please continue to practise ‘popcorn’ (sight) words whenever possible.

Home suggestions to support classroom learning:
  • Use pictures on the cover and/or the book’s title to predict what the story will be about. Check back during the story to see if they want to change their predictions as they are given more information through print and pictures (…be a story ‘detective’). * Search for “popcorn” words in any text whenever.
  • Review the number of syllables in words (also described as ‘chunks of sound’ - e.g. rain/bow = 2).
  • Practice printing lower case letters at all times (- except when a capital letter is called for). Encourage more printing practice by labeling their drawings or items around the house (e.g. “bed” / “door” / “lamp”).
  • Practice counting to 50 & beyond. They also love to count moves like jumping-jacks, bunny hops, etc.
  • Use small items (e.g. marbles, lego) to practice adding & subtracting; start with 5 and work up to 10.
  • Count in French how many steps it takes to get from your front door to the bedroom/ kitchen/ sofa/ etc.
  • Have your child identify (or teach you) colours, the weather, or other common words in French.
  • Enjoy a ‘treasure hunt’ for shapes or patterns (e.g. dinner plate =circle; table = square; floor tiles = pattern).
French vocabulary for 'Janvier':
winter/ hiver               snow/ neige              ice / glace         cold/ froid                 slide/ glisser       ski / skier       skate/ patiner         snowman/ bonhomme de neige                coat/ manteau           hat/ chapeau         mittens/ mitaines    boots/ bottes               snow pants/ pantalon  de neige         sled / traineau             snowflake/ flocon de neige

The SKs are learning to complete simple phrases, such as:
Je veux _____. / Je peux _____.  / J'aime ______.
           (glisser  /  patiner  /  skier  /   jouer)

Report cards will be sent home
February 18th. JK's will not have any formal mark, only anecdotal comments. SK's will have developmentally appropriate marks where a 'DE' indicates that your child is "Developing as Expected", which means they are meeting the Kindergarten program expectations as outlined by the Ministry of Education.  Children who are actively demonstrating skills (in class) that are significantly above ministry standards would merit a WD’, which signifies “Well Developed” or beyond expectations.  A 'BD' indicates that a child is “Beginning to Develop” the skill and requires further reinforcement.  A 'NT' signifies "Needs more Time and experience", as the skill or expectation has not yet begun to develop or is not demonstrated at school.

PLEASE SEND IN extra set of CLOTHES

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have discovered that many students either do not have their extra set of clothes at school or some things were used and are now missing from the bag.

"Extra clothes" bag should have the following items:

- one pair of pants
- one top
- one pair of underwear
- one pair of socks

Please send in necessary items as soon as possible.

IT IS COLD BUT WE GO OUTSIDE TO PLAY!

 WINTER CLOTHING:
- snow pants
- boots
jacket (& neckwarmer / scarf)
hat
mittens
are absolutely essential winter items! Please choose items that your child can easily and independently use. We request your child wear MITTENS* instead of gloves for this reason. (*Preferably waterproof too)

We recommend testing out new items WITH your child before buying if possible. For example, if in the store your child can put their new boots BOTH on & off by themselves, then they should also be able to do it at school. (Frustration arising from difficulty dressing is a common problem that often leads to tears.)

We usually enjoy an hour* of outdoor play!
(- unless temperatures or weather conditions are too severe)
*Usually 40 minutes after lunch (11:35  to 12:15 am) and then another 15-20 minutes at the end of the day. Taking this part of our daily routine into consideration, please ALWAYS DRESS your child appropriately for both the weather conditions & the demands of outdoor play!

We have been teaching children to dress in the following sequence: 1. Pants  2. Boots  3. Jacket   4. Hat (& scarf or neckwarmer - for low temperatures of -15C or colder) 5. LAST: mittens!

The reason we want their mittens to be put on last is to promote & simplify dressing independently! (By using their hands!)
- Putting on clothing items can be challenging for children who are 4 or 5 years old but these fine motor skills do develop with practice, so we expect every child to dress with little to no teacher assistance and (eventually) do up their own zipper.
- We ask that you please allow them to practice these independence skills at home too. The more often they even attempt to do things on their own, the more proficient and confident they will become.

Thanks so much for all your support!
